Amanda Fucking Palmer

by Samantha ~ April 16th, 2009. Filed under: adventures.

This morning, my friend Darren called to inform me that Miss Amanda Palmer would be playing a secret show at a secret location that only her followers on Twitter would know about.  My reply was “Dude,  I just woke up, and don’t care about anything all that much at the moment”.

About an hour later, Darren called me back and demanded to get my ass down to a strange little part of L.A., where the trains, 5, 101, and 110 meet, and apparently, where Amanda Palmer plays in tiny warehouse-ish spaces for less than 50 people (most of whom ditched school or work to be there).  Needless to say, I am overly pleased that I went.  This is now the third time I have seen her live, but the first that I have seen a solo performance.

Have you not done so yet, go give a listen to her album “Who Killed Amanda Palmer“.  It’s a gooden.

Are you aware your 5d EXIF shows the name “Niels Henrik Harboe” on every picture?

Yes, I am. He’s the person I bought the camera from, and the warranties & such are under his name. He’s a close friend, so I figured it didn’t matter.

Semi-private “secret” live shows kick ass. The more inappropriate the venue, the better. Say, somebody’s small living room… in a cheap apartment/flat. Or a warehouse-type-place.

I like those venues that are “upstairs” somewhere, and it just feels like somebody’s converted medium-sized living room where they decided to add a small bar and a two-inch-high stage. It does not work for a prog-rock five piece, but for solos and duos (preferably without an [acoustic] drummer — drums are loud and mess up the mix) they’re great.

Intimacy and subtlety have been ruined by consumerism and commercialisation for all art/media forms. It’s SO good to say “fuck you, capitalism!” once in a while and take a little back.
