Burhl
by Samantha ~ July 27th, 2009. Filed under: adventures.

I made it home from Costa Rica a few days ago, along with a gross sinus infection which caused me to miss Comic Con. More pictures and tales to follow in the not so distant future, but for now, I leave you with Burhl, the monster that shared a shower with Nixon one evening in the Arenal region.
Any arachnologists out there want to take a guess as to what he might be? The closest we can figure is that he’s either a member of the huntsman or the fishing families, and was about 6-8 inches in diameter (even with the missing legs).

Sounds like you and Nixon are on the right track spider-wise. I know a little about creatures local to me, but nothing like him or her has ever shown up on my doorstep (or popped up in the shower). :)

These folks should know.

I measured 6-8 inches out on my desk and shuddered even more. I am embarrassingly arachnophobic. I’m glad you and Nixon survived.

Bob – First thing I did when I got home was submit him to What’s That Bug! I think I narrowed it down, but unfortunately the link is on my laptop. I think it was a member of the nursery web spider family, which is closely related to the two that we guessed!
Shannon : um, yeah. +1. Had to get over the screaming flailing arms girly thing quick in CR. If you are ever traveling to a remote location full of creepy crawlies, I recommend bringing Nixon along with. She’s good at the “oh that’s a blah blah blah” game.
