Glad to See My Tax Dollars at Work
by Samantha ~ July 8th, 2009. Filed under: miscellaneous magic.Personally, I’m sick of the abundant media coverage of Michael Jackson’s death. I can’t turn on the television, check the “news”, or open up a social networking site without being bombarded with it. I’m halfway tempted to delete this, just so it isn’t one more thing about it out there in the ether.
But really, I don’t care that he sang your favorite song in the early 80s.
I’ll Be Home for Christmas download
The only thing that he has been in the news for over the past 20 years is as the brunt of Wacko Jacko jokes and “allegedly” molesting young boys, and that has been conveniently and immediately forgotten. The sheep followers of the media have shed their tears (loudly, I might add), and suddenly lionized a man that a few weeks ago would have mocked for his lifestyle choices and aesthetics.
The Matrix Revolutions divx Yeah, I know, he was a international superstar whose music impacted the lives of countless people. How, exactly, he could directly impact you, I’m not entirely sure, since he was as far removed from reality as you could possibly be. Yes, he did a great thing with that We Are the World fundraiser (over twenty years ago, in 1985), and put up larger than life statues of himself all over Europe to promote an album. Yeah, we’ve all been drunk a a party at some point and did the Thriller dance. Woo.
Even worse than his sudden widely accepted innocence – and don’t argue with me over “innocent until proven guilty” bullshit, you don’t settle for millions out of court if you are innocent – was that his elaborate memorial service was paid for out of California tax payers pockets. $4 million out of our pockets, according to the LA Weekly See No Evil movie full
. Why so much? Oh, for over a thousand cops, street closures, workers to clean up the mess, and then some. And even better, the mayor of Los Angeles has the gall to ask for donations for the event from the public. City and state employees are getting paid in IOU slips and getting laid off, and my cigarettes are up to $7+ a pack because of the state’s debt, but MJ OD’s, and everyone forgets all about that.
I am so incredibly elated to have my tax dollars going towards a pedophile’s public funeral service I could fucking burst. Yes, yes, I know, an “alleged” pedophile that sang your very favorite song when you were 8.
And if you don’t agree with me, you’re obviously on the Other Team.

Yeah, I’ve been following all of that nonsense. Shame on Villaraigosa. Did you ever get your state refund? I remember reading about students being totally screwed over with their already awarded grants, cut in half and some cut altogether. Ugh, California. Maybe Schwarzenpecker can do a few more Terminator sequels to help out?
July 8th, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Surprisingly, I did get my refund, even though I had expected an IOU in its place.
I’m just so glad I don’t live downtown anymore and didn’t have to deal with the chaos of the service. It disgusts me.

I think his estate can foot the bill for the event, and I’ve heard cost estimates as high as 7 million dollars. The city is already millions in the hole this fiscal year.
July 8th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
Fucking seriously. As if any other “alleged” pedophiles in this country have ever had the support of the general public on the whole innocent until proven guilty stance.

Bravo! Well put. You can move to WI! Smokes are about 6 bucks here.
hehe…hehe…hehe…sigh.

luckily for me ive spent the last 2 weeks offshore and havent been that battered by it, other than there being some mention on every single sat TV channel, near on every website, and every news paper since said event. Money can buy silence but it will never buy his innocence. I say thanks for a few cool songs and a dance I cant do, but I’m glad you are gone.

How’s this for deliciously ironic counterprogramming: while half the networks in the country were covering the memorial, USA was showing SVU. :D
July 8th, 2009 at 10:33 PM
wait tax payers are paying for that shit? thats it we need a revolution

Yet another reason to quit smoking: Every pack you buy will help pay for Michael Jackson’s funeral.
July 9th, 2009 at 12:14 AM
Eric – from what I understand, the family didn’t spend a single penny on the service. And I do hope they played that SVU episode based off him that day!
Heather – fucking SERIOUSLY.
JonJon – haha, I was in WI a few years back & couldn’t believe you guys could actually smoke inside!
Rusty – I know. I’ve been trying to block it out, but it’s nearly impossible.
Bairdduvessa – Yup. You didn’t hear that?
Steve – SO TRUE!

Are you even from california?? Or do you just not understand how & what is responsible for our budget deficit & what bring revenue to the state?
July 9th, 2009 at 12:31 AM
38 – I’ve been a California resident for almost 9 years now, and yes, I am well aware of deficits & revenue cause and effects. My point is that we are billions in debt, and now are paying for a multi-millionaire’s service costs. The Jackson family did not spend a dime on it, and the residents of the city have been handed the financial responsibility, so next time you verbally attack someone, maybe you should do a bit more research.

ugh!!! Sucks because soon we won’t be able to. I believe that act will start next year. Not so bad during summer but winters, BURRRRRrrrr!!
I really hate Billy O’Reilly but i agree with what he had to say about…he who we will not mention. : )
July 9th, 2009 at 12:54 AM
i think maybe the best we can hope for is his name to become just as jonjon says, he who we will not mention. im thinking something along the lines of the knights who say ni.
July 9th, 2009 at 1:31 AM
Indeed. Thats what I say when i talk about one of my ex’s. She who we will not mention. So it can totally work in this case! Lets start a movement!

I agree Michael is wack and I never got his appeal and shit howdy for molesting boys. At the same time, nobody messes with Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin etc etc for messing with little girls. There are about as many lawsuits dismissed on that because it was supposedly consensual and the parents caught wind, collected out of court, Ladida. It is ALL fucked up. Man in the mirror shit.

Hear, hear – and he didn’t even sing my favourite song from the early 80’s (that would be “Come Dancing” by The Kinks). It’s Princess Diana all over again – just because people were used to reading about everything he did in the tabloids and celebrity mags, they think they’ve lost a close personal friend. Ho hum.
July 9th, 2009 at 6:54 AM
I couldn’t agree more. People act like he’s a saint, completely omitting the fact that his pedophile ass got rich mans justice in both sets of charges.
July 9th, 2009 at 12:27 PM
Knowing you like SVU, I figured you’d appreciate the irony more than most. :D
I think the city should count up the costs and file a lien against the estate. After all, the family didn’t HAVE to have a public service.
Much as I hate the O’Reillys of the world on the right and left (for talking AT you instead of TO you and encouraging people to hate other people solely for their political views), but in this case O’Reilly is just speaking common sense. He should try that more often.
And even if MJ didn’t molest those two boys, his behavior around kids was inappropriate and creepy.
You’ve stirred up quite a thread here.

Ya know, I agree with you about the tax dollars bs. IN fact, when Michael Jackson died, I said “so what”, being of the same minded “pedophile” believing group. I also agree that the media is out of control. But I figured, ya know, if I’m going to open my mouth and start trashing a now dead man, maybe I should actually know what the hell I’m talking about and began looking up the details of both cases.
I now believe there’s a distinct possibility he was INNOCENT of those charges and allegations. And even if there’s 1% chance he was not the monster you’ve just portrayed him, then most of what you wrote comes off extremely ignorant let alone callous.
Like you, I’m not much of a fan of his music but the man DID do a lot of good with his money and fame, a fact that cannot be denied. And just because you and I cannot “relate” to what his fans feel, doesn’t mean it’s right to bash those who are sad over his death. Too far? YES absolutely. Jackson weird and eccentric? Of course. But all this blog entry did was cause you to look very foolish and bitter.
You’re free to say what you want but so are others free to consider YOU way below the dead man you now look like a total creep yourself for bashing.
July 10th, 2009 at 6:12 PM
I don’t feel like I look foolish or bitter, Rex. I feel like I stated my point, which was that I don’t think it was the CA taxpayers responsibility to have to take a hit for the memorial costs. Nor do I feel that I was ignorant or callous, although you are welcome to your opinion.
I actually am well aware of the details of both cases, and I don’t think whether or not he is alive or dead makes a difference for me to have my own opinion on it.
If you are to now consider me “well below the dead man” and a creep, so be it. At least I don’t spend my time engaging in inappropriate relationships with young children or expecting the general public in a time of great fiscal turmoil to cover my unnecessary costs.
For fuck’s sake people, he was a pop star, not a world leader.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:34 AM
When WAS the death of a world leader as “important” as Jackson’s death?
July 13th, 2009 at 3:19 PM
the real my died long ago, so this hype does not make sense. esp. in a bankrupt state.
July 13th, 2009 at 3:19 PM
my -> MJ (typo)

Michael Jackson will truly be with us forever – all that plastic in his face isn’t bio-degradable.
Anyway, I am not a California resident or even an American so feel free to tell me to shut my pie hole on this, but why are so many ragging on Michael Jackson now? Don’t get me wrong, I agree with what has been said here – but the stuff that has gone on in the wake of his death isn’t Jacksons fault. The public funeral… the fucking stupid news organizations going on and on about it as if it was important… the conspiracy theories that he is hiding out somewhere and made this whole thing up to get out of the European tour… all of this is driven by some bean-counters in the upper-echelons of the the media organizations.
The man isn’t what is getting buried, they are burying a brand.
The problem really boils down to us. When we see Jacko splattered across the front of a newspaper we shouldn’t buy that paper. When we see him on the news doing that stupid moonwalk we should turn the telly over to something more cultured (like Baywatch). But it won’t happen, mark my words. When Britney Spears kicks the bucket there will be 7 millions trees worth of newspapers printed containing nothing more than ‘facts’ about her. She’ll get a public burial just like whacko-Jacko. And it won’t really be her fault. It will be ours for turning her into a brand.
