September Stacks
by Samantha ~ September 1st, 2009. Filed under: stacked.
These shall be my friends over the coming weeks, in no particular order :
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World : I’m about half-way through this at the moment, and really quite enjoying it. Someone had loaned me The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle one summer past, and when the author’s name came up in conversation not long ago, I remembered how good it was. Japanese novels seem to always lose a bit in translation, but you can still catch the original feel to Murakami.
North Country ipod The Inferno, The Waste Land
, The Metamorphosis & Other Stories : I’ve had many copies of these over the years, and all seem to wander off at some point or another. It’s time to become reacquainted. Obviously, I’m a fan of Dante, as you can tell by the sides of my hands. Ella Enchanted download
Kafka on the Shore : Another Murakami, and there’s still another that I left in my mother’s car in NY last week. I like finding authors that I can devour.
Roald Dahl : Collected Stories
: This was a gift from the same person that originally had me read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and many others that have been added to my favorites list. My friends have fantastic taste in literature.
1491 : New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus
: I am a horrible person for still having this on my reading list. I borrowed it from Nixon almost a year ago, and for some reason, it keeps getting shuffled to the bottom of every stack of books I accumulate. I am not buying another book until this one is complete.
The 21 (Twenty One Movie) download Eraserhead movie download Only Revolutions : I bought this as soon as I finished House of Leaves, read the first page, then had to go online to find instructions on how to read it. It works backwards, simultaneous, and in code, from two people that are perpetually sixteen and are marked by dates. I may have to take on a yoga class or heavy meditation before I can conquer it.

Even though I haven’t finished Only Revolutions myself, the best thing I’ve found for getting through it is -listening- to it. I was able to see MZD on his book tour for it and it sounded SO GOOD coming through out of someone’s voice. I think there’s an audiobook out there somewhere with him and someone else reading it which I’d love to get my hands on one day.
Other than that, yeah, I pick up that book everytime and almost wanna cry with both sheer joy and wonder at the effort and awesomeness it took and the horrible hassle it would take me to read it.
Murakami is fantastic, btw. I really like After Dark, though, it seems no one else loves it as much as I do.
Great, great, great booklist here.

You were spot on with House of Leaves. Rare to find a creepy book that pushes stylistic barriers as well.
Only Revolutions is kicking my butt, I’ve returned to Against the Day, given that it’s far less complicated and downright easy to read, for Pynchon. Will have to try OR in snippets, but I admit, I am enough of a dullard that the date columns are distracting for my poor mind.
Wasteland. So worth it. I like to pick it up a few times a month and spend 15 minutes or so with chai and The Wasteland’s imagery.
Hard-Boiled Wonderland, another I somehow missed. I may have to stop reading through your book recommendations, as I tend to compulsively purchase good reading material.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland is an excellent book. You are correct about somethings being lost in translation. If you like it I recommend picking up Outrageous Fortune by Tim Scott.
