Yesterday, the Mister took me on a series of adventures, some of which shall now become frequent haunts of mine. First of the lot was a visit to a tiny and amazing Ramen bar that I cannot wait to return to. Broth so spicy that I actually broke a sweat while eating, but could not stop! I feel like I hadn’t truly lived before eating a sliced avocado that had soaked in soy sauce and super hot vegetarian broth.

Ramen really is what comfort food is all about. We left the bar with bellies full of spicy broth and noodles, without that hideous bloat that goes along with American food.

So.Very.Delicious.

After Adventures in Ramening, there was a terrifying walk through Times Square to make our way to see Inception. It totally lived up the enormous hype that has been built around it, which I wasn’t expecting. Have you seen it? What did you think?

Next in Adventureland was a visit to a basement level surf bar that smelled like coconut and tanning oil. It was too dark to get any decent photos, but the postcard that was paperclipped to our check sums it up nicely. I have big plans to spend an afternoon tasting every Freezy Boozy Fruity drink on their menu next month when Courtney Riot comes to visit.

In other news, Operation Quit Smoking has been going smashingly.

I have moved onto Phase Three of my master plan, and the techo-smoke is working like magic. After spending about a week doing about a 50 / 50 split between real cigarettes and “vaping”, I had my last Camel about a day and a half ago. I’ve exclusively been using the Njoy since, and haven’t had any of the usual freak outs that accompany quitting.

I’ve tried almost every quitting aide on the market, and so far, this is the only one that hasn’t made me physically ill and still allows me to mimic the actual ritual of having a cigarette, sans having to carry around a lighter. Keep your fingers crossed for me, friends!

Tiny Victories

A few days ago, I decided it was time to learn to knit. I picked up a copy of Stitch ‘N Bitch : The Knitter’s Handbook, walked over to the Garment District, and bought a set of needles & a few different colors of yarn.

The last three days, in between bottles of wine and silly movies, I have cursed, thrown my supplies down, and watched more than a dozen This Is How You Knit, You Retard videos on youtube. There was also some pointing and laughing in my direction, but it was well deserved.

Now, I am a basics master and knitted a teeny, tiny little swatch – all cast on, English Method, and bound off like an old pro!

Friends, family, and small animals – be warned. There shall be scarves in your future.

In other news, we had another blizzard, and my man & one of our roommates braved the storm and had brunch. One of these days, I will venture outside with my fancy camera again, but Snowpocalypse V.10million was not that day.

It Was Going to be Brief

Briefly :

I took that with my phone yesterday while on a train. I believe I was crossing a bridge somewhere in between Harlem and the Bronx, but I could be totally wrong. Not wrong about the bridge, but not sure exactly where the bridge could have been. I was headed north of the city to shoot a new hopeful for Suicide Girls, and it was cold and snowing on and off all day.

The top of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2010 was to quit smoking. I’m on Day 9, currently. The first three days were completely nicotine free, and after that, I allow myself a drag or two per day. This is the third time I’ve made an effort to quit, and honestly, it’s the only time it ever feels like it might last. Yes, I suppose technically I am still smoking, but it’s prevented me from buying packs, and it takes the edge off completely. It also makes me completely sick to my stomach, so hopefully within the next few weeks I won’t need that, either. I’m still an emotional wreck, and am probably hell to be around.

Yay for self-inflicted chemical imbalances!

In other non-smoking or train riding news, a good portion of 2010 thus far has been spent :

Job Hunting, which is just about as exciting as it sounds
Movie watching – Sherlock Holmes (awesome), Avatar (pretty, but Ferngully for grownups), Jennifer’s Body (surprisingly entertaining & funny), UP (possibly the most emotionally moving movie I’ve seen in years, and an amazing story to boot), and a fair amount more that I can’t think of at the moment
Dexter Season 4 – I can’t believe how many of my friends said this season wasn’t that great. I think it rivaled the first season for best one yet.
Freezing my ass off. Who would have guessed it’s cold in NY in January?
Making shoe shopping lists in my head, which will eventually be posted on Haute Macabre.

I also can’t stop watching Jersey Shore.

Don’t judge me.

Induced Epidemics

Nixon and I are excited, because we finally have embarked on an adventure together that hasn’t wound up with fearing for our lives, screaming girls, vans or SUVs of any kind, or the phrases “Life experience” or “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Our little spooky fashion blog, Haute Macabre, is about to turn a year old, shortly after our first event : Induced Epidemics

It’s rather close this time around, and I spend one day driving around to no avail trying to find a decent vantage point. Finally, later that night, I found one from the top of Taget, and sadly, I didn’t have a camera on hand. The hills looked like volcanos in the not so far off distance. The following day, I tracked down my friend Darren, whom is as ready to spring forward into potentially terrible decisions as I, and we went straight to the source.

At one point, we managed to get up the mountain top and look straight into the heart of it. Before I could even put the car in park, we were ushered away by the fire fighters. It was, in the literal sense of the word, awesome. Not to marginalize it by chalking it up to a pop culture reference, but it was like looking into Modor, or one of the circles of hell of dear ol’ Dante.

What have I learned from this experience? Well, for one, follow the smoke, sirens, and news vans for the best views. Two, smile real big at the police at road stops, and they’ll let you walk on by.

I’m still a little awestruck about having wifi on a flight. Currently, I am 34,903 feet in the air and somewhere over Missouri.

I happen to be more than just a tiny bit exhausted after this trip. My plan to combat jetlag failed miserably, so rather than acclimating to EST, I woke up around dawn almost every day and sustained myself on a diet of coffee and cigarettes. Three hours is just enough of a difference to throw you out of whack.

I don’t think I took a single photo this week other than those two above. I did just find a lens cap in my boot this very moment, and I’m not really sure what it is doing there. I’ve been wearing the boots in question for many hours now, and don’t recall putting it in there at any point.

I made it home from Costa Rica a few days ago, along with a gross sinus infection which caused me to miss Comic Con. More pictures and tales to follow in the not so distant future, but for now, I leave you with Burhl, the monster that shared a shower with Nixon one evening in the Arenal region.
