There is something so incredible about Louisiana strawberries that I can’t get enough of them. A few days ago, I made some iced green tea, and after convincing myself that it didn’t look like a jar out of Howard Hughe’s home collection, I realized it wasn’t as satisfying as I wanted it to be.

It needed some gorgeous, sweet, perfect strawberries!

Strawberry Simple Syrup Recipe :

• 1 cup sugar
• 1 1/2 cup water
• 1 lb strawberries, hulled & sliced
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan and simmer on a low heat. I left it on for about two 30 Rock episodes on Netflix. We don’t have any clocks in our kitchen, so I time things by TV. It works. I separated the syrup from the compote strawberries and saved them in different jars.

Here are a few different things I tried out with the syrup ::

Strawberry Pimm’s Cup :: Favorite, favorite, favorite. I could drink these all day and all night.

• 2 oz Pimm’s
• 1 1/2 oz Hendrick’s gin
• 1 oz strawberry syrup
• lemonade

There were similar experiments in mixing involving tequila, which were delicious in their own right. Ryan also used some of the residual berries to garnish one of his super fancy mint juleps, but I haven’t the slightest clue how he makes them.

And, of course, my improved “took the healthy right out of that” green tea!

It’s very definitely springtime in New Orleans! Everything smells lovely, and other than swarming termites every night around dusk (Apparently, every year about this time, they hatch and have wings until they reach adulthood. It’s like something straight out of a horror movie.), it’s a gorgeous time of year. We’re all enjoying it before the devastating heat and humidity sets in sometime during the summer.

My new orchids seem to be happily blooming along. I’ve watered them once in the week that I’ve had them, and leave them in the window during the day with some indirect light. Low maintenance FTW!

It was a good mail week. I really wasn’t kidding when I said I think I’m getting a little addicted to Etsy.

Still trying to get comfortable taking photos of myself. I force myself to a few times a week, and always feel a little ridiculous and a little … self-involved (maybe that’s not quite the word, but you get what I mean).

This face, on the other hand, I never stop taking pictures of.

Coffee & magazines on a Sunday morning! Perfect way to wake up and start the day.

It’s a super long photo roundup! I tried to keep it brief, but it’s just been too long and I had too many things! From here on, I’m going to start doing a weekly (or bi-weekly, at the worst) Photo Roundup, even if not much is going on. I’ve noticed that whenever I’m blogging here, I feel more creative and want to have more projects going on, so sticking to a schedule might motivate me even more.

I’ve been into jewelry lately. Way into it. I’ve been spending a lot of time browsing Etsy (add me to your circles!), and finding some really awesome shops around town. My recent acquisitions include an etched ring from Adelina Mictlan, a vintage scarab cuff that I found at The Revival Outpost, two versions of the bone necklace I’m wearing above, and a death’s head moth brass cuff by Unique Art Pendants. I had the moth cuff bookmarked on Etsy for weeks, and found it in a shop I walk past all the time and finally stopped into! They also have a Ouija bracelet that I might have to get to match my planchette ring.

Sawa was in town for the weekend, and we got to run around the French Quarter taking Instax photos all day. The last time I saw her was over two years ago at Haute Macabre’s Induced Epidemics show in LA, and I missed that lady! In between drinks, we had an impromptu shoot in the Carousel Bar with a Ventian mask, visited voodoo shops, and ate a delicious dinner at Cochon – fried alligator, rabbit dumplings, and way, way too much wine.

Sawa & I tipped these guys in a bottle of Jameson’s, and they totally deserved it.

Yup, this city is still amazing!

Ryan and I actually had a few days off together this month, and they were lazy and lovely. Not usually having free time together makes us really appreciate when we do. This week we had brunch and a Law & Order SVU marathon on our day, and it was a perfectly relaxing Monday.
